A book collecting all of these sketches, and written in French, English and Thai, has been published with the friendly partnership of Soukha Editions, which is a French publisher from Bangkok. If you are interested in getting one of these books : http://www.gavroche-thailande.com/actualites/a-lire/1930-tranches-de-siam-en-vente-ici

With a serious expression on his face the little chap looks hard at me, showing the same concentration as I am giving to sketching him. Then, after a few seconds, he loses interest in me as I intrude on his infant life. The little Buddha reckons he has more important things to do, like finishing his banana.

So young and already a Coke addict?…. To be serious, I was more interested in seeing how the logo of this world-famous fizzy drink has been rendered in Thai. Whether the adaptation is in Thai, in Arabic, in Chinese or Cyrillic characters, the brand is immediately identifiable everywhere. A real achievement in terms of a universally recognized image, and a considerable accomplishment for the designers.

Only two rather smiling eyes appear above the mask which is attached to a hat thus protecting the wearer from both the dust and the sun. This style of headgear is worn everywhere in the countryside; now it is increasingly present in Bangkok city life - municipal gardeners, policemen and building workers can be seen wearing it.

On his head a grandfather is wearing an ingenious marvel of design: the traditional Thai hat. There is nothing more uncomfortable when it's very hot than a tightly fitting hat which sticks to the scalp. Grandfather's hat is designed like a lampshade with very few points of contact with the head thus allowing the air to circulate freely.

Fresh mangos, papayas, bananas.... With, sometimes, apples, cherries and strawberries too, directly arriving from Northern Thailand, knowing that these "exotic" fruits enjoy the european climate they get in these areas... All fruits you can find every day in Bangkok streets, and all of them more fresh tant the seller cart (Thanks Buddha !...) But why to add so much salt inside fresh orange juices ? I still can't believe it !....

A small street restaurant. Here, for a few baht, I've eaten noodle soup, pork curry, beef or chicken cooked, as they should be, with hot peppers. Seated at long tables set up on the pavement, I have met, during the course of a meal, people from virtually every social class from bank managers to employees from the nearby beauty salon, not to mention street hawkers and ladies from the neighbourhood bar.

Bangkok must be one of the cleanest cities in the world judging by the impressive number of itinerant broom and feather duster-sellers travelling through the city streets and getting people's attention by little toots on their bicycle hooters. Of course, in the business district there is very little graffiti on the walls and you could eat your meal off the floor of any skytrain station. In other areas of the city however cleanliness is hard to find amidst all the refuse.

A venerable old musician is playing the 'ranat', shaded by the trees of Bangkok's Lumphini Park. As far as I can judge he is a real virtuoso. His precise and rapid fingering of the xylophone's wooden keys produces a liquid sound which reminds me of drops of tropical rain falling on a forest of green bamboo.

Next to the master a young man is playing an accompaniment on a 'taphon' -

a long drum set horizontally in front of him; he drums with the flat of his hand to the tips of his fingers. He plays slowly and calmly… nothing extravagant…an accompaniment which is minimalist yet effective. He seems to be concentrating very hard - he is a little tense, anxious to be worthy of his master.

This old gentleman is sitting to play the 'sor duang'. This is a small two-stringed instrument which the musician holds between his knees and draws a bow horizontally across the strings. His way of holding the bow is somewhat unconventional. The sound produced is shrill and the melody seems rather strange to European ears unaccustomed to this way of using septatonic scale.

In the heat, a young fellow of about 10 or 11, the perspiration pouring off him, is wearing himself out playing a kind of mouth organ (called a 'khene' in Thai). He is facing a large crowd of tourists who find this kind of exoticism so charming. They are busily taking photographs yet seldom notice the small cup placed in front of him. They hate me for interrupting the show but I am certainly entitled to this poor kid's shining smile as I take him for an iced orange juice in the shade.

Cultural differences in Sukhumvit, soi 5... Hijab alongside to sexy clothing... It appears to be a wonderfull example for tolerance through dresscodes.. Even if tolerance seems to be a more feminine than masculine prerogative... And even if one of the parties looks really less openminded, especially regarding some of non native minorities, which shows a silent (until now...) but perceptible way for dissaproving...

The daily intrusion of spirituality into the profane world of the Thai…. Almost every home has its 'Spirit House" and it's even quite common to see them in front of public buildings such as hospitals, or private buildings such as banks. Indeed, you can even see these Spirit Houses next to certain bars in the red-light district. The faithful meditate respectfully in the 'wai' position, sometimes holding several smoking joss sticks between their clasped hands.

An itinerant pedlar….in this enlightened age of the 35 hour week he cannot, even in his wildest dreams, envisage the possibility of retirement at 65. He is concerned by more immediate and down-to-earth challenges, wondering what he will be able to sell today and whether he will make enough money to feed his family. He knows quite literally what it means to "carry the weight of the business on his shoulders"…

Petite pause.

A short break. Just enough time to read a few pages in a local newspaper….I often wonder what distances these itinerant street vendors cover - men and women, often elderly, who sell the kind of food that presents somewhat of a surprise for non-Asian tastes. I have to say that I draw the line at cockroaches though the taste of grilled grasshoppers reminds me of peanuts.

A street couturier. He is working on an ancient pedal Singer sewing machine - no electricity on the street. Certainly he doesn't claim to be a Jean-Claude Gaultier, but he will take great care in stitching the hem of that pair of designer jeans (a copy of course) which you have just bought. Squatting in front of him on a little plastic stool which he has so thoughtfully provided for you, you'll wait for him to finish the job.

An icon of Thailand: the tuk-tuk. This form of transport is to Bangkok what the gondola is to Venice or the yellow cab to New York. It's a three-wheeled taxi driven with great skill by local fans of Formula 1 racing. (If you want your driver to slow down, say "cha cha"). This means of transport is not without charm, but its comfort is open to discussion. Apart from its picturesque quality it does allow you, when stuck in a traffic jam, to appreciate in full measure the extent of atmospheric pollution in the City of Angels.

This is the time when the big (fat?) cats come to drink. A significant consumption of alcohol causes inhibitions to disappear and they can begin to make their plans. The hunt for the gazelles of the district is about to begin. Good fortune is with them. These particular gazelles don't run very fast. On the contrary it would seem that they are waiting...

Gazelles reservation... They don't look frightened, just a little tired, but still cheerful, smiling, and sometimes a bit derisive. Evey day comes a new pack of these drunk farang with big mouths, all different and all similar. And so confident in the seductive power of their banknotes... Today, as every day, is is just one more night working.

In the streets of Nong Khai an old monk is smiling.. Dressed in saffron robe, he carries a bowl in which he will receive food for the day. Early in the morning he has accepted offerings from tradesmen and from the faithful waiting for him in front of their houses. He thanks them with a prayer in Pali, the liturgical language derived from Sanskrit. Now he will return to the temple to share with his fellow monks the offerings he has received…I love to listen to the monks early in the morning intoning their prayers.

I have finally obtained clear evidence that Thailand's reputation as the Land of Smiles is well-founded…Exhausted by the heat, that Thai man has chosen to have a little nap in the shade on a pontoon by the water's edge. Unconcerned about the hardness of his improvised bed, he is clearly in the middle of a lovely dream, a babylike smile on his lips as he sleeps.

All the kids in the world share the same body language when they are sulking: head bowed, tummy sticking out and a pursing lower lip. This means "OK…now I've had enough. I don't even want to look at you : in three words - I despise you!"

When it comes to body weight, the Romeo from Tennessee is probably the equivalent of three Juliets from Khon Kaen.. Perhaps it's time to slow down on the Budweisers, the Cokes and the hamburgers and instead to consider some sticky rice, boiled vegetables, beanshoots and iced tea.. What do you think, Romeo ?

A grandmother arrives by boat with her son at one of the floating markets which surround Bangkok. They are there to sell their produce which is piled up at the bottom of the boat. At more than 70 years old she remains flirtatious. Granny is always careful to protect herself and her pale skin from the heat of the sun under a large umbrella which serves as a sunshade.

Sunday morning at Chatuchak market in Bangkok. Hearing a few notes coming from a banjo, I recognize the theme music from John Boorman's cult film "Deliverance". A guitar provides a musical response so I move towards the source of the music. There In front of me, an Asian cowboy is playing a duet with… a pre-recorded tape. Life in Bangkok is certainly full of surprises.

Here all the girls, whatever their age, automatically sit side-saddle on the back of motorbike taxis even when they are wearing trousers. Sitting diagonally across the rear seat, often loaded with shopping bags, they always show great elegance getting onto the motorbike. They often wear flip-flops which they balance on the end of their feet. The shoes NEVER fall off...

An old boy on the lookout for adventure in the girlie bars; hoping to find some exotic sexual experience on the cheap right in the heart of Patpong…As evidence of his total open-mindedness, he despises as an out-of-date attitude, any suggestion that there might be something unacceptable about an enormous age gap between consenting sexual partners...

Sitting cross-legged on her kitchen floor, this young woman appears to be using the materials of an apothecary in the preparation of the meal. A wise precaution in my view given the explosive nature of the food being prepared. Phet nit noi! (please, go easy on the chilli peppers !...)
