This old gentleman is sitting to play the 'sor duang'. This is a small two-stringed instrument which the musician holds between his knees and draws a bow horizontally across the strings. His way of holding the bow is somewhat unconventional. The sound produced is shrill and the melody seems rather strange to European ears unaccustomed to this way of using septatonic scale.
